Interface converter ICM5
From RS232 to RS485 / RS422
galvanically isolated
- Converter from RS232 to RS485/RS422
- Galvanically isolated up to 1000 VDC
- 9-pin SUB-D connector for RS232 connection
- RJ11 plug or terminal strip for RS485/RS422 connection
- Automatic RS485 transmit/receive control, therefore no handshaking necessary
- Baud rate: 9,600, 19,200, 38,400, 57,600 or 115,200
- Half-duplex (RS485) and full-duplex (RS422)
- Selectable DTE & DCE operation

The ICM5 interface converter can be used to connect devices with an RS232 interface to devices with an RS485 or RS422 interface. Both data formats must correspond to each other. Galvanic isolation prevents damage to the connected devices due to voltage peaks etc. 3 LEDs on the front indicate whether the power supply is present (green LED lights up) and whether data is being received (red LED flashes) or transmitted (green LED flashes) via the RS232 interface. A power supply of 9 VDC to 26 VDC is required. The ICM5 is simply snapped onto a C-rail or top-hat rail.
RS232:
RXD: max. +/- 30 VDC. Logic 1: < 0.8 VDC, logic 0: > 2.4 VDC.
TXD: logic 1: -8 VDC (typ.), logic 0: +8 VDC (typ.).
RS485:
Differential voltage at the output: max. +/-5 VDC (without load).
Differential voltage at the input: max. +/-5 VDC.
Logic 1: < -0.2 VDC, logic 0: > +0.2 VDC.
Up to 32 RS485 participants can be operated in parallel.
Switch-off time: after 1 character depending on the baud rate.
DIP switch:
Switchable DCE/DTE operation
Baud rate adjustable
120 Ohm termination resistor
4.7 kOhm bias resistor
DIP switch settings: (upper switching block)
Switches 1 to 5: Baud rate
Selects the desired baud rate. This regulates the time delay of the automatic RS485 driver control. Only one switch can be set to "ON".
Switches 6 and 7: Pull-up/pull-down resistor
Switches a 4.7 kOhm resistor to generate a bias voltage in the A or B line of the RS485 interface.
Switches 8 and 9: 4 lines OFF / 2 lines ON
This switch switches a 120 Ohm resistor across the two tracks of the RS485 receiver. Only for the first or last device.
DIP switch settings: (lower switching block)
Switches 1 and 2: OFF RS422 / ON RS485
In the RS422 position, the ICM5 is in full duplex mode and transmits/receives continuously. In the RS485 position, the ICM5 waits a character length until it becomes internally high-impedance and switches to transmit mode.
Switch 3: N/C
This switch has no connection.
Switches 4 to 7: OFFDCE/ONDTE
These switches enable the RS232 connection to operate with a null modem or modem cable. All switches set to DCE (pin 2 of the SUBD connector is the receiver, pin 3 is the transmitter). In the DTE position it is the other way round. All switches must be in either the DTE or DCE position, no other combination is possible.
